![]() It’s a shame I’m stuck on the first-generation iPad, but I think a lot of us in that boat will be watching Apple closely this week. The usability and workflow features look great (with tools like iCloud, even if I prefer Dropbox). ![]() There’s a nice patch browser for flipping through your patches, with big previews.Īudulus is in for Apple’s review watch our Twitter feed for news of when it ships. The initial version is iOS 6 only, but I’m going to try to rewrite the iOS 6 specific stuff so it will run on the iPad 1.Files are cross-compatible with the Mac and Audio Unit versions: build a patch on the iPad, load it on the Mac or in your DAW.All nodes are there except the Audio Unit node (as you know the iPad doesn’t support plugins).(Mac users, you can grab this for fifty bucks on the app store.) Taylor notes: Audulus is described as With Audulus, you can build synthesizers, design new sounds, or process audio. Courtesy the developer.ĭeveloper Taylor Holliday does point us to some key features in the iPad rendition of this tool. Since it’s easier to see these features than listen to me talking about it, I’ll let your eyes have at it.Īudulus, looking quite nice on iPad. So, for those of you who see iPads as a companion to a laptop, rather than a placement, using the two in harmony could work nicely.ĬDM has an exclusive first look at the video demonstrating the UI. Secondly, it’ll have a round-trip workflow with the Mac version. ![]() With Audulus, you can build synthesizers, design new sounds, or process audio. First, it could be one of the nicest modulars to grace the iPad, for people looking for touch interfaces to do such things. Audulus 3 is a stunning and intuitive modular synth for iOS and desktop. It’s not as deep or broad as some alternatives, but it does bring a range of ideas to making these features easy to use.Īnd now, it’s coming to the iPad. Audulus is an elegant, efficient modular environment on the Mac. And that explains the ongoing appeal of modular software environments. Ultimately, building instruments and effects with Audulus is simple and rewarding, making it ideal for newcomers to the world of modular synthesis and demanding patchcord masters alike.Sometimes, it can be quicker and more expressive to simply patch together what you want from basic building blocks, rather than wrangle with something built for a specific purpose. Like any modular, Audulus can be a bit fiddly at first, but there are tutorials on the website that'll get you happily patching in no time. We like that the iPad and desktop versions are edited in a very similar manner and, in fact, are compatible with one another (within the limitations of the iPad version, such as patches not being able to store presets, no Sample node and no AU support, obviously). Modular synths have never been easy, but Audulus comes as close to it as any ever has. It's all straightforward enough - assuming a basic understanding of synthesis and sound design - but advanced users won't feel like they're being underserved in terms of power and flexibility. Tooltips describes each input and output, as well as the controls for each node. This is accomplished by dragging virtual cables from one node's outputs to another's inputs, ultimately constructing a complete signal flow. Of course, it's the sound quality of the modules that really matters, and Audulus sounds fantastic - although much of its potential needs to be realised by the user. Suffice it to say that there's more than enough here to satisfy even the most demanding modular synthesist. Audiobus support - Runs as both an Input and Effect. Universal Modulation - modulate any knob. A number of utilities and metering nodes are available, too, as are useful things like Sequencer, Crossfade and the aforementioned plugin host. iCloud support - effortlessly sync patches between Mac and iPad. "It's the sound quality of the modules that really matters, and Audulus sounds fantastic"Īt the more technical end of the scale are various mathematical function nodes that add, multiply, divide and randomise signals, among other things.
